What are some common dental emergencies?

Common emergencies that we see include, but are not limited to:

  • Severe toothache
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Chipped or broken tooth
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Abscess or infection
  • Soft tissue injury (gums, cheeks, lips)

What should I do in a
dental emergency?

During a dental emergency, stay calm and take immediate action. For a knocked-out tooth, pick it up by the crown, rinse it gently, and try to place it back in the socket without forcing it. If this isn’t possible, store it in milk or saliva and get to our office as soon as possible. For a cracked or chipped tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If you have a broken jaw or more severe injuries, we recommend visiting your nearest ER. Quick and proper action can prevent complications and lead to a better outcome.

What should I do for my
toothache?

For a toothache, start by rinsing your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Use dental floss to remove any food particles trapped between your teeth. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage the pain, but avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gums. Apply a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling if needed.

If the pain ever becomes unbearable, schedule a visit with Dr. Oei as soon as possible. If the pain is not severe, we will still want to get an appointment scheduled to assess the situation at your earliest convenience.
